Lahore Qalandars head coach Aqib Javed on Monday shied away from shouldering the blame for his side's continued failures in the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020, and pointed fingers at his players' inability to adjust to match situations.

Javed stated even if the pre-match game plan was outlined, it was the players' job to take the executive decision and ensure that they change things up according to the situation.

“This is not an U-15 team where the game plan is scripted and acted upon word for word. These are professional players who have over ten-plus years of experience. They have to take decisions while keeping the scoreboard in mind,” he said.

“With that said, I’m not going to go on the ground and direct them.”

Javed also defended skipper Sohail Akhtar and said that the inexperienced cricketer was surrounded by a plethora of seasoned players who also failed to impress with the bat.

“We have eight batsmen in the team who have played close to 50 matches while the rest have played more than 200 matches and we are still failing to score and defend totals,” he said.

“When the team loses the game, the captain is blamed but the real reason is that the batsmen have failed to make runs."

Javed further said that the bowlers had failed to capitalise on crucial moments.

“On the field he [Akhtar] divides up the overs but it’s not like he’s doing that alone. He has Mohammad Hafeez,  Chris Lynn and David Weise with him on the field who are former captains and help him who to pick,” he noted.

“Our match against Islamabad saw a 182 run score, but our bowlers failed to defend the total. The team needs to understand that they have a shared responsibility," Javed added.
