The Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Jay Shah, set his eyes on the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle and the upcoming Champions Trophy after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 recently.

India became the third team after West Indies and England to win the T20 World Cup two times and now Shah has asked the team to set their sights on remaining ICC trophies.

“The way this team is progressing, our target is to win the World Test Championship final and Champions Trophy. There will be a similar squad playing there. The seniors will be there,” Jay Shah was quoted as saying by the Press Trust of India (PTI).

He backed Rohit Sharma as the captain saying that even in ODI World Cup 2023, India went undefeated all tournament but lost the final. However, this time they held their nerves and clinched the title.

“It was the same captain last year and here in Barbados. We won all games except the final in 2023 as Australia played better. This time we worked even harder and played better to win the title. If you look at other teams, experience counts,” he added.

“From Rohit to Virat, all excelled. Experience makes a lot of difference, in World Cups you can’t experiment much also. A good player knows when to say goodbye to the game, we saw that yesterday. You look at Rohit’s strike rate, it is better than a lot of young players.”

It is worth mentioning that two of India’s most senior players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, confirmed their retirement from T20Is as their sole focus would be on Test and ODIs.

With the Champions Trophy taking place next year in Pakistan, India will once again have a great chance to lift the title as the tournament will be played in Asian conditions.
