Former India batter Virender Sehwag named the candidate to replace Rohit Sharma as a captain after the Blues clinched the T20 World Cup 2024 by beating South Africa in the final at the Kensington Oval, Barbados.

After the win, two of India’s powerhouses, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharm, announced their retirements from T20Is which meant that the Blues will have to find a new captain for the shorter format as well as a top-order batter.

Talking to Cricbuzz after India’s win, Sehwag argued that Shubman Gill, who was part of India’s T20 World Cup squad as a travelling reserve, could be the best choice for the captaincy in the long run.

"Shubman Gill is for the long haul. He's a player who plays all three formats. He's had a great last year. He was unlucky to miss out on the 2024 T20 World Cup. According to me, it is the right decision to make him the captain. When Rohit Sharma leaves tomorrow, Shubman Gill will be his right replacement for captaincy," Sehwag told Cricbuzz.

Hardik Pandya looks to be the prime candidate to replace Sharma as the captain as he was his deputy during the World Cup but the decision will be made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) soon.

However, for India’s upcoming T20I series against Zimbabwe, Gill was named captain which could be an indication of him being India’s next skipper in the shorter format.
