The T20 World Cup 2024 concluded at the Kensington Oval, Barbados, on Saturday with India lifting the title after beating South Africa in the final in one of the best matches of the tournament.

This was India's second T20 World Cup as their first title win came in 2007, when MS Dhoni led the Blues to glory in the inaugural edition by beating Pakistan in the final in Johannesburg.

As the tournament has concluded, it is time to look at 11 players who had a disappointing campaign.

1- Reeza Hendricks

The expectations were much from Reeza Hendricks as South Africa went all the way to the final of the T20 World Cup but the right-handed batter couldn't play any memorable winnings for the Proteas. In nine innings played, he only scored 113 runs at 14.12 average and 87.59 strike rate. In the final against, he scored only four runs.

2- Mohammad Rizwan (wk)

Being given the responsibility to open the innings for Pakistan and one of the top-rated players in the T20I rankings, expectations were high from Mohammad Rizwan but he failed in the Green Shirts’ most important matches.

Against the USA, he only scored nine runs. Meanwhile, against India, when Pakistan had the match in their grasp, the wicketkeeper lost his wicket to Jasprit Bumrah after contributing 31 runs and the Men in Green ended up losing the match. In total, Rizwan scored 110 runs in four innings at a 36.66 average and a mediocre strike rate of 90.90.

3- Mitchell Marsh (c)

Mitchell Marsh came into the World Cup after sustaining an injury in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 due to which he wasn’t allowed to bowl until the Super 8. He had a very disappointing campaign as he amassed 125 runs in seven innings. In Australia’s last two matches against Afghanistan and India, he scored 12 and 37 runs respectively, which couldn’t make much of a difference.

4- Kane Williamson

One of the members of the 'Fab Four' in cricket, Kane Williamson led New Zealand in the T20 World Cup as one of the biggest names in the world of cricket. But the Black Caps suffered a group-stage exit, after losing matches to Afghanistan and West Indies. Williamson scored a total of 10 runs in those two encounters which ended the Kiwis’ journey in the tournament.

5- Shivam Dube

Shivam Dube was given a place in India’s squad for T20 World Cup after a great campaign in IPL 2024 but the all-rounder couldn’t replicate his heroics. The left-handed batter looked low in confidence throughout the tournament and failed to play any noteworthy innings for India. He scored 133 runs in eight innings.

6- Shadab Khan

One of the most senior players in Pakistan’s squad, Shadab Khan is widely considered one of the best all-rounders in the world, especially in the shorter format, but his performance in the T20 World Cup was awful as he failed to provide anything for Pakistan in the entire campaign.

With the bat, he scored 44 runs in three innings, with his top score being 40 which came against the USA. Meanwhile, against India, he scored just four runs while against Ireland, he couldn’t open his account. With the ball, he failed to pick any wicket in the three matches he bowled.

7- Liam Livingstone

Liam Livingstone was included in England’s squad to play as a lower middle-order batter and provide breakthroughs for the 2022 T20 World Cup champions with the ball but the right-armer failed to deliver. In the four innings he batted, he scored 72 runs. Against India in the semi-final, he posted just 11 runs at a time when his side desperately needed him to come good. With the ball, he picked up three wickets in four innings.

8- Sam Curran

The Player of the Match of the 2022 T20 World Cup final against Pakistan, Sam Curran came into this tournament with a load of responsibilities and expectations on his shoulders but he utterly failed to do anything of value for the English team with the ball. In five matches he bowled, the left-armer picked just three wickets, two against South Africa and one against India in the semi-final.

9- Mitchell Santner

The conditions in West Indies supported spinners generally but not for Mitchell Santner. The Black Caps’ spinner struggled greatly, while his economy (5.56) was great, he couldn’t take wickets to give a breakthrough for his side. Against Afghanistan, the left-armer went wicketless while against the West Indies, he removed Akeal Hosein, who is not known for his batting. He took a total of four wickets in the mega event.

10- Matheehsa Pathirana

Matheehsa Pathirana is one of the best bowlers in the shorter format and his performance in IPL 2024 proves it as he bagged 13 wickets in six matches in batting-friendly conditions of IPL. However, in the World Cup, he was struggling to take wickets as in three matches, he bagged just three scalps, two of which came against the Netherlands, and he went wicketless against South Africa.

11- Mitchell Starc

Mitchell Starc is known for stepping up and delivering for Australia in ICC tournaments. He performed well in the 2015, 2019 and 2023 ODI World Cups and was also a part of Australia’s T20 World Cup 2021 winning team. But this time, things didn’t go his way. He bagged five wickets in as many matches. In one of the matches, India's Rohit Sharma smashed him for 29 runs in an over in the Super 8.

Rizwan is a fighter and a leader. He has proved it time and again in all formats of cricket. Personally he is ahead in leadership qualities than Babar. He desrves to be the Captain of Pakistan Cricket Team in limited overs. No doubt...
