Andy Murray is set to miss Wimbledon starting from July 1 after he underwent a spinal operation, as confirmed by ATP on Sunday.

“After an operation on a spinal cyst, Andy Murray is sadly out of Wimbledon. Rest up and recover Andy, we’ll miss seeing you there,” the ATP wrote on their X account (formerly Twitter).

Murray has won two of his three gland slams titles at Wimbledon and following up with a victory over Alexei Popyrin at the Queen’s Club Championships, he was playing against Jordan Thompson on Wednesday in his second-round Queen’s match but had to withdraw due to a back injury while trailing 4-1 in the first set.

His team promptly confirmed that Murray had to go under an operation to treat the spinal cyst and doubts over his availability in the upcoming Wimbledon and the Paris Olympics started to surface. The 2024 Wimbledon was set to be the 37-year-old tennis player’s last Wimbledon appearance.

Murray had previously undergone hip surgery in 2019 and was back to his game and tours but he continued to struggle to make it to the later rounds of tournaments.

He recently suffered from another setback as he damaged the ligaments of his left ankle during the Miami Open in March. He obtained the injury during the final set of his loss to Tomas Machac and withdrew from the Monte Carlo Masters and Munich Open. Despite the injury, he opted to not have surgery for his ankle.

Murray has clearly stated that he does not see himself continuing to play in the next tennis season and that it would be a fitting end to his career if he bowed out at the All England Club games or the Paris Games.

The 137th edition of the Wimbledon will begin on July 1 and conclude on July 14. Spanish tennis player, Carlos Alcaraz won the Wimbledon in 2023.
