Afghanistan defeated Australia in the Super 8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024 by 21 runs at the Arnos Vale Stadium in St. Vincent but despite the loss, skipper Mitchell Marsh was confident that his side will bounce back in  next match against India.

Australia’s qualification for the T20 World Cup semi-finals is now under threat after losing against Afghanistan as they have just one more game to go against India on June 24.

"We have a lot of belief in our group. We are a very good cricket team. Yes, tonight we had an off night, but I guess there's also a positive in the fact that in 36 hours we go again. I think if you look back at the short history of this team, I know for a fact that it brings out the best in our guys, so the boys will certainly be up and about for it,” Marsh stated as quoted by ESPN Cricinfo.

"It's all about trusting ourselves," he added. "We've got a good bunch of people and I believe our best is up there with the best. So, we need to bring that on whatever day it is in a couple of days' time and move forward pretty quickly,” he added.

Marsh admitted that Australia did not excel in the fielding department against Afghanistan.

"We certainly pride ourselves on our fielding. Can't question the boys putting in the work. I think it's no different to any other skill set. We put in the work, we didn't execute in the field tonight and ultimately it played a part in us losing the game," he said.

Earlier, Australia elected to bowl first and restricted Afghanistan to a score of 148 runs at the loss of six wickets. Australia then failed to chase the target of 149 and fell 22 runs short.

Their highest run-scorer in the game was Glenn Maxwell who scored 59 off 41 balls. Gulbadin Naib turned out to be the star bowler for Afghanistan as he dismissed four of Australia’s batters including Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis and Tim David.

Naveen ul Haq took three wickets in his four-over spell and gave away 20 runs.
