India's head coach Rahul Dravid’s successor, Gautam Gambhir, will not be travelling with the Indian cricket team on their tour of Zimbabwe to play a five-match T20I series in July.

Gambhir is set to take head coach responsibility from Dravid, who will retire after the T20 World Cup 2024. He has clarified that he is not going to reapply for the position.

However, Gambhir will not be travelling to Zimbabwe for the upcoming series which is set to begin from July 6. Instead, he will accompany the team to Sri Lanka for the six-match series — three one-day and three T20 matches — se to be played from July 27.

An official announcement regarding this has yet to be made.

According to a report by India's PTI, National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief Vangipurapu Venkata Sai Laxman is going to lead the team as the head coach of the Blue Shirts in their upcoming series against Zimbabwe.

Moreover, along with his NCA staff, Laxman is going to finalise the Indian squad for the series in Zimbabwe in the upcoming month. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is going to reveal the final squad later this week.

The squad comprises the top performers of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Either right-handed batter Suryakumar Yadav or all-rounder Hardik Pandya might be leading the Men in Blue in this series.

According to the BCCI, Laxman and the NCA team have always filled up whenever Dravid has taken periodic breaks.

"There is a possibility that Laxman, along with some of the NCA coaches, will travel with the new look squad to Zimbabwe. Laxman and the NCA team have always filled up whenever Rahul Dravid and the first team coaches have taken periodic breaks during their stint," a BCCI source told the news agency.
