Australia have nominated all-rounder Mitchell Marsh as the probable candidate for the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA.

The 32-year-old has received an endorsement from Andrew McDonald, the head coach of the men's national team.

McDonald, who is part of the selection panel along with chairman George Bailey and Tony Dodemaide, will formally recommend to Cricket Australia for Marsh to assume the role of T20I captain.

"I think all roads will lead to Mitch, so just got to get that ticked off in certain areas. We're happy and comfortable with the way he's been able to operate with that T20 team. We think he's the leader for the World Cup, and I think that will just be a matter of due course," said McDonald.

Since Aaron Finch's retirement, Marsh have led the T20I setup in eight games from 2023. Matthew Wade captained the team in the five-match T20I series against India when Marsh was rested, and the wicketkeeper-batter also led the side in the final T20I against New Zealand last month with the 32-year-old all-rounder, now an all-format player, being rested again.

Australia do not have any T20I assignments before the World Cup, which begins on 1st June. Australia, who are part of Group B, play Oman in their opening encounter on 5th June. This will be followed by matches against England, Namibia, and Scotland on 8th, 11th, and 15th June respectively.
