Pakistan wins four medals in Special Olympics

KARACHI: Pakistan have won four medals in the ongoing Special Olympics World Games in Berlin on Tuesday.

Pakistan's Saifullah Solangi won two gold medals in the powerlifting event. He won the gold medals after lifting 90 kg in the back squat and a deadlift of 115 kg. 

In the combined event, Solangi bagged a silver medal with a lift of 245 kg. He also won a bronze medal in the 40 kg bench press.

Overall, Solangi won two Gold, one Silver and one Bronze in the Special Olympics World Games Powerlifting event.

Pakistan’s special athletes have made a positive start in the Special Olympics.

In the athletics event at the Olympia Stadium, Pakistan's Samina Bibi and Mohammad Bashar qualified for the finals in the 50m race.

Ammara Brahim qualified for the 200m race final while Abdul Haseeb made it to the 800m race final.

Fiza Abbasi (200m), Man Bibi (400m) and Mirwaiz (1500m) also blasted their way into the semi-finals.

Muhammad Luqman and Manahil reached the quarter-finals of the 100m while Umair Kayani qualified for the semi-finals in the shot put event.

In the 4×400 mixed relay, during the ongoing Berlin Special Olympics World Games, Pakistan athletes qualified for the final by getting the third position in their heat in the semi-final.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday expressed his best wishes to the 87-member delegation of the country’s differently-abled athletes who are taking part in the being held in Germany from June 17 to June 25.

“I am confident that our special and privileged athletes will use the mega opportunity to bring laurels to the motherland through their talent and determination,” the prime minister posted on his Twitter handle.

“Now is the time to reap the fruit of hard work they put in while preparing for 11 games,” he added.

He said that the delegation have the prayers of the whole nation with them.

From June 17-25, 2023, Berlin, Germany will host 7,000 Special Olympics athletes and Unified partners from approximately 190 countries to compete in 26 sports.

The athletes will be supported by more than 3,000 coaches and 20,000 volunteers.
