KARACHI: After Sunday's game against New Zealand, Australia's white-ball skipper Aaron Finch will retire from one-day international (ODI) cricket.

Finch, who has served as the team's ODI and T20 captain since 2018, participated in 145 ODIs and has amassed 5,401 runs at an average of 39.13.

He steered Australia to their first T20 World Cup victory in 2021, and he will will defend the title when the tournament returns to Australia in October.

"It has been a fantastic ride with some incredible memories," said Finch.

"I have been extremely fortunate to be a part of some brilliant one-day sides. Equally, I have been blessed by all those I have played with and the many people behind the scenes.

"It is time now to give a new leader the best possible opportunity to prepare for and win the next World Cup. I thank all of those who have helped and supported my journey to this point."

Finch's position in the team was in doubt due to his recent ODI performance, as he averages just 13 in 2022.

In the second ODI match against New Zealand on Thursday, he recorded his fifth duck of the year.

Having played for nine different teams in the India Premier League (IPL) and for Melbourne Renegades in Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) from the league's inception in 2011, he continues to be among the most well-known T20 cricket players in the globe.
