The many similarities between Pakistan's 2019 and 1992 World Cup campaigns

Are these mere coincidences or is the team going somewhere with this?

“We have, we will” — the idea behind Pakistan cricket team's official World Cup 2019 slogan was to let it be known that the Men in Green won the tournament in the past and will do so again.

And, it seems that the Pakistan's crop of 2019 are actually trying to do exactly the same that the class of 1992 had done. In fact, the team's current situation in the tournament isn’t too dissimilar from what it was 27 years ago.

Believe it or not, results of the first six games in 2019 are identical to their results from first 6 games in 1992.

Back then and now, Pakistan lost to West Indies in the opening game on both occasions but bounced back in their second before their third was washed out.

Pakistan of 2019, just like 1992, were beaten in their fourth and fifth games but returned to winning ways in their sixth.

Then captain now prime minister Imran Khan with the 1992 World Cup trophy

Making it more interesting, Pakistan’s man of the match on both occasion was “Sohail” — Aamir in 1992 and Haris in 2019.

In 1992, Pakistan were hoping for Australia’s win against West Indies to stay in contention. Once again, Pakistan want Australia to win for them, albeit this time against England.

The list of coincidents has one more interesting entry: New Zealand were unbeaten in 1992 World Cup before Pakistan blemished their record. The Kiwis are unbeaten in this tournament as well, and face Pakistan on Wednesday.

The class of 1992 were a lost cause before suddenly catching fire and going all the way. Is the 2019 bunch taking the same route?
