Former greats back PCB stance over World Cup

KARACHI: Former cricketers supported Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) move to serve a legal notice against International Cricket Council (ICC) for the discriminatory shift of World Cup matches from Pakistan.

Legendary batsman Hanif Mohammad told PPI that ICC has been unfair to Pakistan by shifting the World Cup matches and PCB's stance against the decision is a good move on part of the Board.

"It is unacceptable to the cricket followers of Pakistan that they (ICC) moved matches from here in such haste. It was an unfair decision," Hanif said. He added that ICC must reconsider their decision.

PCB chairman Ijaz Butt on Saturday said the manner in which the ICC took the decision of shifting World Cup matches from Pakistan was discriminatory. "There was no notice prior to the meeting that a decision of this nature would be taken. There was no proper security assessment of Pakistan of the other co-hosts of the 2011 tournament.

We believe that more could and should have been done to review the actual situation to deal with the matter on a non-discriminatory basis," Ijaz said. "The ICC's decision to shift the matches was not correct in legal terms. And we have also approached the Court of Arbitration for Sports to seek justice," he said.

Another legendary batsman Zaheer Abbas said that all the co-hosts of the World Cup were insecure and particularly extracting the event's matches from Pakistan was discriminatory. "I totally agree with the move of the PCB. I have said earlier that India is holding its IPL (Indian Premier League) in South Africa, Bangladesh backed off from hosting Pakistan team recently, all because they also face the similar threat of security problems," Zaheer said.

Zaheer said that if the World Cup takes place in the other three co-hosts than Pakistan must boycott the event. He said that Pakistan have been targetted and they must stand for their rights.

Another cricketer said on conditions of anonymity that ICC had been biased as it was not working for the benefit of all of its members.

"Australian tennis team withdrew from competing their Davis Cup tie in India, BCCI (Board of Cricket Control in India) moved its cash-rich IPL to South Africa and it shows that India is also not a safe place, and scrapping Pakistan as World Cup host shows ICC's dual policy," he said.

He accused Haroon Lorgat, the ICC chief executive, of having dual policy. "The chief executive wants to have another term and therefore wants the support of BCCI who have a strong say in ICC," he added. "If it was really a case of security concerns than it must be a joke, see the situations in India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. One facing mutiny in its forces, the other has a strong rebellion since decades," he said.
