Dravid reaches 10,000-run mark in ODIs

Rahul Dravid of India has become only the sixth batsman in the history of One-day International cricket to complete 10,000 runs in his career. He crossed the milestone when he reached 22 during his innings of 66 in the third ODI against Sri Lanka at Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, Margao on Wednesday, February 14.

Born on January 11, 1973 in Indore, Rahul Sharad Dravid made his International dubut on April 3, 1996 against Sri Lanka in Singapore. This right-arm middle-order batsman is captaining India since 2005. he is nicknamed ‘The Wall’ for his stonewalling against the best attacks.

Ricky Ponting becomes sixth player to score 1000 runs in World Cups

Australian captain Ricky Ponting leading from the front scored a magnificent century to help his team crush Scotland by a huge margin of 203 runs in their opening group ‘A’ match at Basseterre, St. Kitts on Wednesday.
He scored 113 off 93 deliveries with the help of nine fours and five sixes. During this innings, he achieved a number of personal feats which are highlighted below:

  • When Ricky Ponting came to the crease, he needed just two runs to complete his 1,000 World Cup runs. He reached this milestone by pushing Dougie Brown through mid-on for four and became the sixth batsman in the World Cup history to do so.

The detail of the six players, who so far made 1000 or more runs in World Cups, is as under:

Batsmen Span M I NO Runs HS Ave 100 50
 S.R. Tendulkar (India) 1992-2003 33 32 3 1732 152 59.72 4 12

 Javed Miandad (Pakistan) 1975-1996 33 30 5 1083 103 43.32 1 8

 M.E. Waugh (Australia) 1992-1999 22 22 3 1004 130 52.84 4 4

Ricky Ponting’s aggregate is now the second highest, after Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar’s 1732.

  • Ponting,s aggregate of 1111 runs is now the highest by an Australian, surpassing Mark Waugh’s 1004. Australia is the only team with two players to make 1000 World Cup runs where as among others one each from the West Indies, India and Pakistan are included in the elite club. No player from any other country has so far reached this milestone.

Other feats:

  • Ponting’s 113 is the 23rd hundred of his 270-match One-day International career. He has now joined India’s Saurav Ganguly as the second highest scorer of ODI centuries after Tendulkar’s improbable 41.
  • This was also his fourth hundred in World Cups and he equaled the record jointly held by Sachin Tendulkar, Mark Waugh and Sarov Ganguly.
  • Ponting also equaled the record of scoring the most hundreds as captain in World Cups, earlier set by Ganguly as India’s captain.
  • The five sixes in his 113 took Ponting’s World Cup tally to 24, surpassing Ganguly’s 23.
  • His total sixes in ODI career are now 126, thus he has equaled his team-mate Adam Gilchrist’s Australian record.

Jayasuriya’s 1000 World Cup runs

Sri Lanka’s veteran batsman and former captain Sanath Jayasuriya also completed his 1000 runs in World Cup cricket when he slammed a six off Sajid Mahmood to take his score to 25 in the World Cup Super Eights match against England on April 4.
He became the tenth batsman to reach this milestone. Five of those ten batsmen - Ricky Ponting, Brian Lara, Sourav Ganguly, Stephen Fleming and Jayasuriya have completed their 1000 World Cup runs in this tournament.
