The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to hold an open-top bus parade for the Indian cricket team on their return to the country after winning the T20 World Cup 2024.

India defeated South Africa by seven runs in one of the most thrilling World Cup matches and helped their side end their ICC trophy drought after 11 years.

India became the third team after West Indies and England to win the T20 World Cup two times as they won their first mega event by beating Pakistan in the final in 2007.

The Indian cricket team left Bridgetown on Wednesday after being stranded on the island for days due to bad weather and they are expected to reach the country on Thursday.

“The players are tired and are mentally fatigued. That is why it was decided to have a short open-top bus parade from NCPA, Nariman Point, to Wankhede Stadium which is not more than 2 kilometers followed by prize distribution, where the Rs 125 crore prize money will be distributed by BCCI secretary Jay Shah,” a source in the Board of Control for Cricket in India told Indian media.

After reaching India on early Thursday morning via a charter plane, the Indian cricket team will be hosted by their Prime Minister Narendra Modi for breakfast after which they will be in front of the fans for an open-top bus parade.

In the final against the Proteas, India managed to post a 177-run target for Aiden Markram’s side in Barbados and their pacers managed to snatch the victory from the jaws of defeat in the last five overs with Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya starring with the ball.

Remember, after winning the Champions Trophy 2013, India went on to lose five ICC finals — T20 World Cup 2014, Champions Trophy 2017, World Test Championship 2021 and 2023 and ODI World Cup 2023.
