Turkish football star Arda Guler joined elite company after his impressive performance during the ongoing Euro 2024.
According to Opta, Arda Guler is the third teenager to both score and assist in the same edition of the UEFA European Championship after Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, who both did so at Euro 2004.
It must be noted that Merih Demiral scored twice as Turkey registered a 2-1 victory over Austria on Tuesday at the Leipzig Stadium and qualified for the quarter-finals of Euro 2024.
It took Turkey 57 seconds to score their first goal when Austria failed to clear Arda Guler's corner and the ball fell to Demiral who smashed it into the roof of the net.
Demiral doubled Turks' advantage in the 59th minute with another towering header after another corner from Guler.
Austria pulled one back seven minutes later courtesy substitute Michael Gregoritsch but they failed to find the equaliser.
Vincenzo Montella's side, who were without the services of suspended captain Hakan Calhanoglu but once again had significant support from the crowd at the Zentralstadion, will face the Dutch in Berlin on Saturday after their convincing 3-0 win over Romania earlier on Tuesday.
Turkey were defeated 6-1 by Austria in March and Montella admitted he was eager to avenge the embarrassing defeat.
"I denied it yesterday but today I can admit that Austria was the team I wanted so that I could get rid of that stain that as a coach I had on me," said Montella.
Turkey will hope that they will face support from their raucous fans in the German capital as they aim to replicate their run to the semi-finals from 16 years ago.
