'India deserved to win T20 World Cup': Shaheen Afridi

Pakistan pacer Shaheen Afridi has said that Team India deserved to win the T20 World Cup 2024 because of the way they played throughout the final against South Africa on Saturday in Barbados.

Rohit Sharma and Co. claimed a 7-run win over the Proteas, securing their second title of the shorter format after a gap of 17 years.

"I watched the match and enjoyed it and both the teams played well. On the day whichever team handles the pressure wins," Shaheen told a group of reporters in London.

"India played a good brand of cricket and deserved to win," he added.

Shaheen stressed Pakistan need to rectify their shortcomings after they were knocked out in the league stage of the World Cup.

"Strong teams compete in the World Cup and they come after going through a process. I think we need to correct few things and if we work hard, results will be with us," he added.

It must be noted six Indian players have been named in the T20 World Cup 2024 Team of the Tournament. The side's captain is Rohit Sharma while Player of the Tournament Jasprit Bumrah, all-rounder Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav, Arshdeep Singh and Axar Patel are the other five Indian players of the team.

Meanwhile, three Afghanistan players - Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Rashid Khan, and Fazalhaq Farooqi are part of the team.

West Indies' Nicholas Pooran and Australia's Marcus Stoinis complete the XI while South Africa's pacer Anrich Nortje is 12th man.
