Jose Mourinho is set to sign a two-year deal with Turkish club Fenerbahce as he has already reached a verbal agreement to start coaching in Turkish Super Lig.
Mourinho has not yet reached Istanbul but the paperwork is being finalised that will have an option to extend the current deal for one more year. Fenerbahce recorded 99 points last season but still lost the title to Galatasaray, which made the club part ways with Ismail Kartal.
Despite being one of the most successful teams in Turkish football history, the Istanbul side has not won the league title since 2014 and Mourinho is aware of the challenge waiting for him.
The Portuguese has been out of work ever since getting sacked by his previous club AS Roma after a rough spell as the Italian club was struggling to win matches in the league.
Mourinho joined Roma in 2021 and the club won the UEFA Conference League and played the UEL final, the club played two successive European finals for the first time in their history.
So far in his coaching career, he has coached clubs like FC Porto, Chelsea (twice), Real Madrid, Manchester United, Tottenham Spurs and AS Roma and has won 21 titles as a coach.
He is also the only manager to win the UEFA Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
Mourinho will be working at the Turkish club with one of his former players, Fred, whom he signed at Manchester United in 2018.
Remember, Mourinho was linked heavily with Chelsea, his former club, and Bayern Munich. The Blues’ supporters chanted Mourinho’s name during a league match against Brentford as things weren’t going too smoothly for Mauricio Pochettino, who left the club earlier this month.
In March, he was present at a Moto GP event in Portimao where he was asked if he had been approached by any club so far.
“Zero, zero. I don’t have a club, I’m free. But I want to work, in the summer I want to work,” Mourinho told local media.
